Summary0002312: installation fine. Cannot execute

I have a MacBook Pro and have to use Windows for certain reasons in a virtual machine.
Specifically, I am running windows xp pro x64 edition.

Is there any particular reason why graphviz stable windows releases should not work in this configuration?
I have tried 2.30 and 2.31 (and older ones). It all seems to be installed correctly, but then I cannot execute it.

Can you be more specific? How are you trying to execute Graphviz? What happens? Are there error messages? Thanks.

gvedit.exe -->
"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem"

I have windows xp x64 edition. SP2. Microsoft .NET 4, Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 redistributable (x64) - 11.0

Please try using the command line interface. Open a DOS shell window and then run

  dot -v x.gv > out.gv

where x.gv is any DOT file, and see if that works. If the problem is with the core software, the error messages should be more helpful. If this works, then the problem is with gvedit.

You will need to either add the bin directory containing dot.exe to your PATH or give the complete pathname when you run dot.

"the system cannot execute the specified program"

In the WINDOWS command line.
WINDOWS is installed as a virtual machine in my MAC, to emphasize.

I am then at a loss. We are not aware of any problems running dot on native Windows machines, and I don't have access to a Windows virtual machine on a mac. I will check around.

Windows running in a virtual machine should not be any different to Graphviz than Windows running directly on the hardware.

I have installed the graphviz 2.32.0 msi in a Windows XP VMware virtual machine on my Mac and it works fine. I can run gvedit and open and see a graph from the included graphs directory. Or I can do it from the command prompt, by choosing "Run" from the Start menu, typing "cmd" and pressing Enter, then typing:

cd "C:\Program Files\Graphviz2.32\bin\"

and then e.g.:

dot.exe ../share/graphviz/graphs/directed/clust.gv

My operating system is 64bits + virtual machine.

Maybe the issue is with the 64 bits?
my Graphviz 2.31 installation goes by default to "Program Files (x64)"

Installation should go to "Program Files (x86)" regardless of x86 or x64
XPx64 has a number of issues that were never fully resolved, setting the programs to run in compatibility mode XPSP2 might help. I've seen limited success with this.

I know on my 7x64SP1 I have to run them in Administrator mode with Compat on XPSP3 or I get odd crashes.
