Summary0002297: Smyrna.exe failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect
DescriptionAfter successful installing Graphviz2.28 ( [^]) on 64bit Win7 Enterprise OS, where VS2010 English Pro was installed also installed. Smyrna.exe is failed to start. The message is "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

In event log, the message is "Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files(x86)\Graphviz 2.28\bin\smyrna.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT, processerArchitecture="x86", publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", type="win32", version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Steps To Reproduce1. Download graphviz2.28 from [^]
2. Install graphviz in its default path
3. Double click on smyrna.exe shortcut or directly from the \bin directory
4. Error message popup
5. Modify smyrna.exe's properties to "Run as Administrator" and run it. Again error message popup.

BTW: platform is Windows 7 Enterprise sp1 64bit English version.
Additional Informationaddition information from sxstrace.exe is uploaded.

Since Event Viewer shows that "Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT" cannot be found, is it build with a "debug" DLL rather than a "release" one ?

Experiencing the same issue with 2.28 on an W7 Enterprise x64 machine. Notably, this seems quite similar to issue 0002108.

According to Dependency Walker (and the sxstrace copies posted with this issue), the assembly is apparently linked against the non-redistributable MSVCR90D.DLL *32-bit* DLL.

Either way, it seems likely that the fix is to rebuild a "Release" version of Smyrna.exe rather than a "Debug" version. If replicating this is an issue, I suggest trying it on a machine that does not have Visual Studio installed (i.e. VS includes the debug DLL's).

I've had this problem and it's relatively easy to fix you will need to install the VC++9.0 redistro for VS 2005
