Generating large graphs with dot

I'm having some problems with generating a large graph. It has 5k nodes and 7k edges. The svg file produced does not render the graph correctly. The labels are overlapping each other. The labels are over each other. It looks like a big mess. Any one who has an idea on how to solve this problem?

I'd still be curious to know what you get from running dot graph.gv |
grep bb.

Assuming that you are doing the layout with dot, the layout ensures that
the labels do not overlap.
However, dot has no control over the exact font used by the svg viewer.
Some svg viewers do a much better
job with fonts than others.

It is hard to make more concrete suggestions without more information.
If you want, file a bug report at

http://www.graphviz.org/bugs/bugform.html

so we can play with the actual graph. This might be a real bug, so it
would be useful to check.

Do you have any clue how your graph should look like in the end? What kind of graph are you plotting? For a particular problem I had to solve, I finally realized that I could guess by myself how I could set every node (it was involving times, so I could plot some nodes along a timeline). I ended up precomputing everything. There are less overkill alternatives, like trying different engines for your graph. If you have one node that is central, you could try twopi.
