Problem:
Text appearance in gif output has degraded from 1.7.3c. In particular,

kerning is poor in some places

some characters are raised above the base line

interline spacing seems cramped

the default font body appears closer to bold

Comments:
The problem is that the programs were being built using an older freetype library. With a new library installed, the output appears okay.
